Big Stone Gap, VA — MECC is pleased to announce that Alyssa England of Ewing, VA, has been selected to receive a full-tuition scholarship at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN.
England was selected by officials at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) to receive the award based on her academic performance, leadership activities, and desire to attend LMU. England has maintained a 3.94 GPA and will graduate with an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in Science this May. She received the 2014 Outstanding Student in Chemistry Award, the 2015 Outstanding Student in Mathematics Award, as well as the 2015 Exceptional Graduate Award.
England is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the MECC Tutor Club. She has served as a tutor in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and remedial math in the GAIN lab for three semesters, contributing to the success of many other students. She has also volunteered in the MECC Food Pantry. England will begin her bachelor’s degree in mathematics at LMU in the fall, with plans to pursue a career in engineering.
“Mountain Empire has prepared me to be a disciplined and motivated student,” said England. Her instructor, Frank Wright, adds, “Beyond just having exceptional talents, Alyssa is a dedicated student and caring person.”
