Club/Organization Description  Staff/Faculty Sponsor


 Creative Writing Club (CWC)  The purpose of this organization is for MECC students who participate in the creative writing process (either fiction, nonfiction, poetry or drama) to discuss the art and practical aspects of creative writing and assist each other in writing proficiency through feedback and exercises.  Jan Richards  Meet every other Friday from 1-2pm in a location to be determined by the Faculty Advisor. Members are expected to arrive on time, sign in for roll call, and begin our planned activity (to be announced on a monthly calendar).
 Danza Comigo     A club designed to infuse culture into everyday life, to romance you with its rhythm. Its purpose is to capture your senses and make them feel alive after a day of classes. Danza conmigo is a team where anyone can come and dance, whether they have two left feet or have been dancing for a while. This club shows you how to believe in yourself, to learn a new way to move, and to work as a team.
The goal is to promote health and wellness and help students remain engaged.
Brandi Barnette 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at noon. Held in cyber café or game room. To be considered an “Active” member one must attend at least half the meetings throughout the year.


 Diplomats     The student diplomat program is a group of talented student leaders who represent MECC in a variety of ways. Student Diplomats provide support within student services and are granted many leadership opportunities on campus. Students are also engaged in diverse activities and community service projects that encourage teamwork, cooperation, integrity and professional behavior.Eligibility Requirements:
• Minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 (may be waived for 1st time students)
• Candidate must be registered for at least 6 semester credit hours
• Be willing to commit to an agreed-upon schedule for at least one semester
• Be willing to adhere to the Diplomat Dress Code and present a well-groomed and professional appearance and attitude.

Enactus is an international non-profit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. MECC Enactus assists with:

• Angel Tree – working with a local head start class and providing Christmas gifts to underprivileged children
• Emergency Preparedness Containers – working with MEOC and providing essential emergency items to impoverished senior citizens

Environmental Science Serves to promote awareness of local environmental issues within our communities and give students the opportunity to work in the field during club projects. Club members gather to visit local streams/rivers to clean up trash and debris. We will also do work on the Powell River Project such as planting seedlings.

Gay-Straight Alliance The Alliance's goal is to foster a more accepting campus for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, through education, support, social action, and advocacy. Schools can be truly safe only when every student is assured of access to an education without fear of harassment, violence, or ridicule. Ultimately, we strive to bring together people of all sexual orientation, be they straight, homosexual, bisexual or transsexual, with the belief that we are all created equal. Brandi Martinez


Healing Hands Healing Hands is a student organization incorporated into the Practical Nursing program.
The mission of Healing Hands is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing students with opportunities to obtain knowledge, technical skills, and leadership development. Our goal is to also promote the awareness of self and each other’s role in the community.

Hearts of Faith The Hearts of Faith organization serves those who are sick or are in nursing homes through visits, small gifts to cheer, and scheduled activities. Major trips in the past have included; St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital of Cincinnati, John’s Hopkins Children’s Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, James H. Quillen Veteran’s Medical Center, Lee Health & Rehabilitation Center, Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home, and Heritage Hall. Gena Massey


Intramurals  MECC offers flag football in the fall from September to the first week of November. The flag football season ends with the Battle of the Borders Flag Football Tournament at UVA-Wise, where MECC competes nearly twenty other schools. MECC also has basketball in the spring, which culminates with the MECC Intramural Tournament. MECC also participates in various basketball tournaments in the service region. Dale Lee


Lambda Alpha Epsilon The Criminal Justice club is the main sponsor for the Haunted Forest Scholarship Fundraiser. We provide funding to the Allen Gibson Memorial Scholarship in memory of a student that was killed in the line of duty. We also provide scholarships for students that participate in the Haunted Forest and meet work hour requirements. The project is open to all MECC students for participation and scholarship consideration. Cindy Ringley One major organizational meeting the last week of August and the remainder of the semester is spent on site working on the project. Work days are scheduled based on student schedules.


MECC Student Veterans  MECC Student Veterans Organization will work to engage the administration, faculty, staff and local veterans support services to improve the educational experience for all MECC student veterans and their families.
Membership is open to all registered veterans, service members currently enrolled and faculty and staff of MECC that are veterans. Members that graduate will be granted alumni membership status. Student veterans will be greeted with friendship, support, and access to resources that will not only enhance their educational experience but will provide social and cultural awareness opportunities that will last a lifetime.

MEGA This club is for individuals that are interested in widening their horizons by visiting art supply stores, art museums and galleries, are willing get along with a diverse group of people and to work fund raisers in order to support our trips. The club hosts day trips to Knoxville, TN, Abingdon, VA, or Asheville, NC and has hosted overnight trips to Cincinnati, OH, Asheville, NC and Washington, D.C. 
MEGA also participates in the Christmas Angel Tree and in recycling cans and plastic.

MERITS MERiTs is a club for students accepted within the Respiratory Care Program. MERiTs participates in fundraising activities and community service activities to raise awareness of health promotion within our school community and the regional community as a whole. MERiTs is the organizing and sponsoring student club for the four blood drives with have annually here at MECC and raises money for other community projects as the need arises. Requirements for membership: Accepted students currently enrolled within the Respiratory Therapy Program

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)    Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of the two-year college. Honor society membership is by invitation only. To receive an invitation, students must meet the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in an Associate’s Program
• Complete 12 credit hours with a 3.5 or higher GPA
• Complete a membership application and pay the one-time membership fee to the International Headquarters.
• Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA after becoming a member of Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa participates in numerous activities revolving around its four hallmarks: leadership, fellowship, scholarship, and service. Previous activities have included recycling and “green” initiatives, graduation completion projects, breast cancer awareness events, Relay for Life, literacy promotion to elementary school children, and purchasing Christmas gifts for needy children in the area.
Trips include regional Phi Theta Kappa conferences and the International Phi Theta Kappa Conference. Major scholarship initiatives include the All Virginia and all USA Academic Teams. Phi Theta Kappa advisors can also assist students in locating scholarships to transfer institutions. Many colleges offer academic scholarships to honor society members. Graduating Phi Theta Kappa members may purchase the honors regalia to wear at graduation and also receive the Phi Theta Kappa seal on their diplomas.
Sarah Gilliam Phi Theta Kappa meets at 12:15 on the first Tuesday of every month in Godwin 214.


Rho-Nu The Rho Nu Nursing Club primarily focuses on raising money for nursing scholarships and participating in occasional community service activities.
Students must be admitted to the Virginia Appalachian Tricollege Nursing Program to be members of the group.

Student Government Association (SGA) SGA provides ways and means for the betterment for MECC and its students through the advancement of leadership and scholarship.
Student Government Association is open to every student who is enrolled in a class at MECC.

Engineering Technology Club The Engineering Technology Club provides students with the chance to learn more about engineering technology outside of the classroom. The organization holds meetings, plan field trips, social events, participate in community service, hold fundraisers, and work on projects. Jake Gilly   1st Tuesday of every Month DC 106


Tutor/Mentor Club The purpose of the Tutor Club is to engage the tutors in campus activities and to serve the community. The Tutor Club is a club exclusively for tutors; you must be a tutor to be a member. Tina Cupp
